Harsco Metals sells 10 million tons annually of steel aggregates in18 countries, thereby reducing landfilling of slag and quarrying of natural aggregates. Our approach is to develop aggregate solutions entirely adapted to local market conditions. Harsco Metals processes and recycles a range of steelmaking slags, including BOS Slag, EAF Slag, AOD Slag, and Ladle Slags. The processing reflects:
- National or State Regulations specifying physical and mechanical properties of materials to be used
- Additional Product requirements: expected service life, user preferences etc.
Road Aggregates - South Africa
Van Reenen’s pass is a steep gradient on the N3 – the busiest road in South Africa, connecting Johannesburg and Durban.
In 2008, Boavista were looking for a sub-soil material allowing efficient drainage, and Harsco recommended EAF slag sourced from the local National Steel Maia steel mill.
With 40 years accumulated experience of research and development on slag use in roadmaking, Harsco was able to develop STEELSTOP® product to match highway authority specification for skid resistance.
