The past few years have confirmed China’s status as the engine of global economic growth, thanks notably to high industrial productivity and success in exporting goods around to the world’s markets. This has fuelled a boom in demand for commodities.
What is less well known is the huge government and private sector push for greener, more sustainable industrial production across this vast country.
This trend also applies to China’s iron and steel industry. As the world’s major producer of these products, China is aiming for production with less energy input, lower CO2 output and the recycling of steelmaking by-products.
As a centrally planned economy, China can direct change more rapidly than some countries.
