Steel refining

Furnace slag is usually too high in FeO. In order to provide desulfurization and alloy predictability the FeO in the slag must be reduced to levels of 5-10%, or less than 5% for automotive exposed grades. Metallurgical treatment products are designed to lower the FeO in the ladle slag, in order to control the properties of the steel being made.

Harsco's ladle refining products are engineered for clean steelmaking practices in high productivity steel shops. These custom-designed additives quickly generate a fluid ladle slag to improve shop productivity and final product quality. The generation of a liquid ladle slag with high CaO and low FeO contents increases the absorption capacity of both oxide inclusions and sulfur. This is necessary to achieve the steel product specifications required for today’s applications.

At Harsco, we configure the exact characteristics of the product to suit the needs of individual customers. Using a mass balance analysis, we analyse a slag sample to determine the furnace chemistry. We compare this with the desired endpoint slag chemistry and typical carryover slag amounts, to create a custom metallurgical treatment product for each steel grade family.
